Latest Setup Updates

Postby asaladinojr on 28 Jul 2010, 20:35

I know that with everyone here (for the most part) being a computer junkie, setups and OS'es can change. I guess I am just a little curious for the latest update as to what everyone is running.

Right now, here's what I have:
ASUS K601J Laptop running Win7/Ubuntu
My Franken-E running only Ubuntu
An ancient desktop soon to be running FreeBSD (downloading the i386 now)
A super-ultra high-powered HP running Win7

I am abandoning the old server I got from my neighbor, as it is just too freaking loud, and without a lot more stuff to put in a rack, I am not building or acquiring one to mount it in. Sounds like I am sharing files and cutting grass at the same time. I was just using it for a file server, and not even a large one since it had a 40GB HDD in it. (I was really just playing with a server)

Anyone else have any changes they have made, or just care to repost your rigs in one place? Might give people an idea of what kind of experience everyone has and what questions they may or may not be able to ask another person.

Eh, I'll bite. Supposed to be working :p

Main Server - Ubuntu 10.04 w/o X11. Runs all my services. 2.0ghz E2180 w/3gb of RAM and 3tb of hdd space. I know, I went cheapo on the hardware but that was by design. I'm lookin to stick with the same mobo & upgrade the processor to a quad-core w/4gb of RAM in a month or so (hopefully).

Laptop - Alienware m5700 - 2gb of RAM, 2.0ghz Intel single core... the dog that I use daily basically. Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04 w/Gnome and KDE. 1920x1200 pretty much means I hate to put this laptop down, but that processor makes me hate to use it!

Desktop - A8N-SLI Premium mobo in an Antec P180B case. Simply gorgeous, but a little old now. It has an AMD dual-core proc, w/3gb of RAM and an Nvidia 8600GT. Used to be my main rig, is still is really... I just don't use it that much anymore. Moved recently, and the new house doesn't really have a place for it. I need to get a damned desk so I can set my office up for work-from-home!!

I'll join.

Media server, running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. It's just a normal HP Media server.

Gaming Rig:
OS: Win7 x64, Ubuntu 10.04.
Case: Antec Twelve Hundred.
Motherboard: Asus M4A79-Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6Ghz Quad.
Gfx Card: ATI HD4870 1GB.
RAM: Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 1866MHz 8GB (4 sticks)
Screen: One Philips 42" and one 24" Benq LCD, both 1080p.
Bonus! Picture of my gaming station! (not very good for the back though.)

And finally my HP 6530b School Laptop. Which was free.
Running OSX, Ubuntu 10.04 and Win7.
HTC Desire.

Not too bad. Guess I could have elaborated a little on my desktops.

The Franken-E has 140Gb HDD, 2Gb Ram, and a 2.2GHz processor.

The Ancient is just that. 40Gb HDD, less than 1Gb Ram, and a 1.? GHz processor.

The HP is sweet, though. Without any modifications, it has 8Gb Ram, 500 Gb HDD, running on a quad-core. Factory. Runs anything I or anyone could ever want to run, just faster than I or they would expect. My first experience with the quad and I gotta say, it is freaking badass.

Ha, yea. I helped a buddy build a quad-core rig about a year ago, we were definitely in awe of how it flew... I'm looking at throwing a cheap quad-core into my server rig soon. That's going to be sweet, I'm hoping to solve my 1080p transcode-on-the-fly studder problem. 720p, no problem... but no 1080.
